How to Read a Kundli Chart

A practical walkthrough of the Vedic birth chart (Janam Kundli): what each layer means, how to read lagna and houses, and where dasha timing fits — written by Sharad Khare, builder of the Samaya Kundli app.

What a Kundli chart shows

Your Kundli is a snapshot of the sky at birth, drawn in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa is the most common setting in India). Unlike tropical Western charts, Vedic Jyotish anchors signs to fixed star positions. The chart answers three beginner questions: where each graha sits by sign and house, which house rules each life area, and when planetary periods (dashas) activate themes.

Step 1 — Find the Lagna (ascendant)

The Lagna is the rising sign at birth. It sets house number one and colors temperament, vitality, and how you meet the world. In a North Indian diamond chart, the Lagna house is typically marked at the top center; South Indian layouts fix signs in place and rotate planets into houses. Confirm birth time to the minute when possible — a four-minute error can shift the ascendant.

Step 2 — Read the twelve houses (Bhavas)

Each house governs a life domain. Beginners usually start with:

Planets occupying a house and planets ruling a house (from their sign lordship) both matter. An empty 10th house does not mean “no career” — look at the 10th lord’s placement and aspects.

Step 3 — Place the nine grahas

Classical Vedic charts use the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. Note each planet’s sign, house, and dignity (own sign, exaltation, debilitation, or neutral). Benefics (Jupiter, Venus, well-placed Mercury) and malefics (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu) are interpreted in context — house topics and lordships refine the story.

Step 4 — Add Vimshottari Dasha timing

Static placement is only half the picture. Vimshottari Dasha sequences planetary periods from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. When you read a Kundli for events — career moves, relationships, relocations — check which mahadasha and antardasha are running and which houses those period lords rule in your chart.
